Green Party Meeting from 9th December 2025

Dec 09, 2025
Cam

Hi everyone

Fantastic meeting on Tuesday, so much momentum and enthusiasm from the group, thanks to all who attended! Things are feeling so positive with Zack making such incredible progress on the national stage. Being able to campaign from second place in the recent polls is so refreshing.

Attending were: Jake, Tony, Cam, Shane, Tom, Dale, Kelly, Grant, Cate, Naomi, Liam, Olly & Jack.

Jake opened the meeting by welcoming Liam and Grant and explained that all our action days and events were led by our members so if individuals have an area they are passionate about they should champion it and then the group will support wherever possible.

Tom talked about his experience door knocking in Tutbury and how he felt that most people he talked to were not voting for the two major parties (labour and conservative) but were opting for the Greens or Reform.

Shane ran a livestream of the meeting so that members who were unable to make the meeting could still participate.

The agenda

Jake led the agenda.

The by-election in Dove is now cancelled as the councillor showed up at the last meeting.

We took part in door knocking and had training in this area from Jack Rose of the Stafford greens and David of the Cannock greens. The event went very well and we plan to do more of this in the future! Tony and Tom went door knocking in Tutbury the next week and had limited success as they encountered many unanswered doors and people unwilling to participate. Jake explained to the group how the marked register works and what the scoring method we use worked.

We discussed the issues and changes within Staffordshire relating to the changing of leadership from former leader and former reform party member Ian Cooper to acting leader of the council Martin Murray.

Cate has agreed to stand as a councillor and we are very excited to get to work on her campaign.

Tom has officially stepped up to the role of secretary.

Tony arranged our second social event and was pleased with how the event turned out and the amount of money we made more than covered the room hire. Everyone agreed that the event was a big success and that we would like Tony to run an event like this one again. Tony agreed but asked if someone could take over advertising the event, the social media team were chosen to do this due to their experience in the area.

Tony asked if there was any way to have confirmation of attendance beforehand so the event organisers know how many are coming. Shane suggested a QR code to confirm attendance of events and Tom followed up by suggesting a google form as an alternative form of attendance confirmation.

We also talked about hosting our meeting at the Burton Bridge Inn but we decided against this as although the meeting room there is free, it was not big enough for us and the larger room upstairs lacks accessibility and the pub itself has no parking.

We decided on hosting a social every quarter.

The social event made a net profit of £45.80 which is a great sum of money. This money was given to Olly to be put into our funds and help us with campaigns in the future. £20 was made from the meeting to go towards paying for the venue we hold our meetings at.

Tom’s litter pick planned for Saturday the 13th is still going ahead. He has had no contact from the council about receiving equipment and support from them despite numerous emails. Tom is planning on going down the day before and checking for flooding.

A number of our members are planning a visit to Burton Hope on the same day, the goal of which is to better understand what they do and how best we can support them.

We have leaflets for the Dove area left over from our door knocking event so if any members who want to do some more door knocking / leaflet deliveries in Dove Ward (Tutbury, Rolleston and Anslow) please do get in touch with us.

Shane has designed a new year’s card to be delivered to members in the new year. We need to proof this and arrange for printing and then deliveries in the New Year. If you are interested in being one of our posties then please let us know- the more people that contribute to leaflet deliveries the lighter the load for the core group.

Jake informed us that there has been further development on the Stapenhill Bowls Club issue: the new landlord is now going ahead with demolition of the club, we previously secured some legal help for the club and we had hoped to set up a go fund me for them but the current group lacks expertise and experience in this area. Jake has contacted journalists to try and get the story out there to no avail. We are going back to the bowls club with the suggestion that they involve the national bowls association for their help in saving the Bowls club.

Achievements since last meeting:

We held a successful day of door knocking training in Tutbury. Cate has agreed to stand as councillor. Our second social event went very well and was well received. One of our members completed a litter pick of an area that we had been made aware of by a member of the public.

Any Other business

A member suggested the next clean up should be the clearing of the Burton Brewery courtyard however Tom mentioned that he thinks the area is private land and therefore it will be harder to get permission to clean it.

Tom is looking for where to do his next litter pick and has asked the social media team if they could ask the general public if there is a specific area that needs cleaning badly. Olly suggested that the clean up should take place in the Dove area since we are targeting that area with Cate.

Cate is looking for volunteers for Anglesey community park, burton conservation volunteers are clearing the overgrowth and are offering to train volunteers in pruning and coppice this will take place the 2nd Sunday of January and February.

Grant brought up greyhound racing and how England still allows it but Scotland, Ireland and Wales have all banned it. Officially the Green party is against it but the Campaign to stop it has slowed down. It was suggested that we contact regional to see if we can find out more about this campaign.

Dale has contacted Good Energy, looking into hydro power on the Dove and the Trent. He is planning a few site visits and an investigation into how communities have been able to create hydro projects with a view to us doing so in the future.

Tony Alyson and Dontae went to a meeting about the proposed solar farm on the flood banks alongside the Trent river. Tony told us he doesn’t feel that the company can guarantee their promises. He told us of their plans to build sink holes to take the flood water.

So much is happening locally now and so many more people are joining us. Thanks for everything you all do to contribute. If any members have areas that they feel they can help with or ideas for how we can work for and engage with our local communities please let us know, either by email or on the WhatsApp group.

Thanks Tom
